Payment Processors for Metaphysical Services: Who Allows Occult & Fortune-Telling
Square, Stripe, and PayPal ban psychic/occult services in their ToS. Find out which processors are actually safe for esoteric businesses in 2026.
This is the most important infrastructure decision for any esoteric business. Choose the wrong payment processor and your account gets terminated - often without warning - taking your revenue, your client data access, and sometimes your payout balance with it.
Three of the most popular payment processors explicitly prohibit psychic, fortune-telling, or occult services in their Terms of Service. This is not theoretical risk. It's documented, enforced, and has shut down real businesses.
> Note: All prices and policies as of mid-2026 - verify current ToS before onboarding.
The Quick Answer
DO NOT USE (high/moderate risk): Square, Stripe (in certain markets), PayPal direct
SAFE for esoteric services: Payhip, NowPayments (crypto), high-risk merchant accounts
Processors That Ban or Restrict Esoteric Services
Square - Explicitly Prohibited
Square's Merchant User Agreement Section 6 prohibits "occult materials." The policy defines prohibited items as anything that "claims to perform a supernatural or metaphysical act."
That language covers:
- Tarot readings
- Astrology consultations
- Energy healing sessions
- Spellwork
- Crystal sales marketed with metaphysical claims
Square actively enforces this. Practitioners selling tarot readings and spiritual services have reported account terminations since at least 2015. Vice reported on witches being terminated. The Square Community forums have threads from affected merchants.
Verdict: Do not use Square for any esoteric business. This applies to Square Appointments as a booking tool too - see booking systems guide.
Stripe - Restricted in Multiple Countries, Risk Elsewhere
Stripe's position is more complex. In many countries, the general restricted businesses list doesn't explicitly name astrology or tarot. However:
- Japan: "Psychic services and fortune tellers" - explicitly prohibited
- Mexico: "Psychic services and fortune tellers" - explicitly prohibited
- Thailand: "Psychic services and fortune tellers" - explicitly prohibited
- Elsewhere: Requires "additional detailed review and explicit approval" for restricted categories
Even where Stripe doesn't explicitly ban esoteric services, merchants report account terminations triggered by customer disputes or reviews. The underlying pressure comes from Visa and Mastercard network rules, which classify psychic services as high-risk categories.
Stripe's standard transaction fee: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction (US).
Verdict: High risk. Do not use Stripe as your primary processor for live readings or metaphysical services. Stripe is less risky for esoteric courses and digital content (educational, not service), but the risk doesn't disappear.
PayPal - Policy Prohibits It, Enforcement Inconsistent
PayPal's Acceptable Use Policy explicitly prohibits "psychic or fortune-teller services" in its Alternative Payment Methods Terms. PayPal Zettle (formerly iZettle) lists "clairvoyants and fortune tellers" as explicitly prohibited.
In practice, PayPal has historically been more lenient in enforcement than Square. Many esoteric practitioners have operated through PayPal for years without issue. That doesn't change what the policy says - or what can happen after a disputed transaction triggers a review.
Verdict: Moderate risk. Policy is clear; enforcement is inconsistent. Not reliable as a primary processor long-term. Termination risk exists, especially if you generate chargebacks.
Safe Options for Esoteric Businesses
Payhip - Recommended Entry Point
Payhip is a digital product and course platform with built-in payments. They have a dedicated landing page: "Sell Psychic Readings Online" at payhip.com/sell-psychic-readings. The explicit support for esoteric services is their stated policy.
Pricing:
- Free: 5% per sale (plus Stripe/PayPal processing - total ~8%+ per transaction)
- Plus: $29/month + 2% per sale
- Pro: $99/month + 0% per sale
Breakeven points (approximate):
- Free vs Plus: ~$967/month in revenue
- Plus vs Pro: ~$3,500/month in revenue
Important nuance: Payhip routes payments through Stripe and PayPal on the backend. Their esoteric-friendly stance is Payhip's policy layer on top of those processors - they shield their merchants. In practice, practitioners selling psychic readings through Payhip have not faced the termination issues common with direct Stripe or PayPal accounts. Payhip's relationship with those processors absorbs the compliance layer.
Best for: New practitioners and established sellers of digital esoteric products (readings, reports, PDF guides). Best entry point in the category.
NowPayments - Safe Crypto Option
Crypto payment processors don't operate under Visa/Mastercard network rules, which is where the esoteric service restrictions originate. NowPayments accepts 300+ cryptocurrencies.
Pricing:
- 0.5% fee for single-currency payments
- 1% fee for auto-conversion (0.5% transaction + 0.5% exchange)
NowPayments has a 4.4/5 rating on Trustpilot from 850+ reviews (as of 2025) and was ranked the #1 crypto payment gateway by Forbes Advisor 2025.
The limitation: Crypto friction is real. A mainstream audience accustomed to card payments won't all have crypto wallets. NowPayments works best as a secondary payment option, not your only one - or as a primary option for practitioners serving crypto-native markets or the Russian market.
Best for: Supplementary crypto payment option for any esoteric business; primary payment method for crypto-native audiences.
High-Risk Merchant Accounts
Specialized payment processors explicitly serve psychic, tarot, and esoteric merchants: Signature Payments, CorePay, PayDiverse, and others. These processors operate in the "high-risk merchant" space.
What to expect:
- Higher transaction fees: typically 3-5%+ per transaction
- Possible rolling reserve requirements (processor holds a percentage of revenue for 90-180 days as chargeback insurance)
- Explicit approval and underwriting process
When it makes sense: High-volume practitioners generating $5,000+/month who need reliable card processing without ToS termination risk. The higher fees are an acceptable cost compared to account termination risk at that revenue level.
Summary Table
Processor | Esoteric allowed? | Fees | Crypto | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Square | NO - explicitly banned | 2.6% + $0.10 in-person | No | Do not use |
Stripe | Banned in JP/MX/TH; risky elsewhere | 2.9% + $0.30 | No | High risk |
PayPal | Policy bans it; inconsistent enforcement | 3.49% + $0.49 | No | Moderate risk |
Payhip | YES - explicit support | 5% (free) to 0% (Pro) | No | Recommended |
NowPayments | YES - crypto only | 0.5-1% | Yes | Safe, limited audience |
High-risk accounts | YES - purpose-built | 3-5%+ | Varies | For high-volume only |
Practical Recommendation
For most esoteric practitioners starting out: Payhip Free (5% fee) or Payhip Plus ($29/month + 2%) as your primary payment layer. Add NowPayments as a crypto option if your audience includes crypto users.
Avoid Square entirely. Use Stripe only for clearly non-service products (digital courses, PDFs) where the ToS risk is lower - and never as your sole processor.
