About This Widget
In astrology, the Big 3 refers to the three most personal placements in a natal chart: the Sun sign, the Moon sign, and the Rising sign (Ascendant). Together they form the foundation of astrological character analysis and explain why people of the same Sun sign can feel so different from one another.
**Sun sign** - your core identity and ego, the sign the Sun occupied at the moment of your birth. This is the placement most people know as their 'star sign.' It describes your conscious self, your will, and the qualities you actively express in the world.
**Moon sign** - your emotional nature and inner life, determined by the Moon's position at birth. The Moon moves quickly through the zodiac (changing signs roughly every 2.5 days), making it one of the most personal and distinctive placements. It governs how you feel, what you need for comfort, and how you react instinctively before conscious thought.
**Rising sign (Ascendant)** - the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your exact time of birth. The Ascendant determines your first house and sets the structure of the entire chart. It shapes your outward manner, physical appearance, and the immediate impression you make on others - the 'costume' you wear in the world.
**Why all three matter**
The Sun shows who you are at your core. The Moon shows who you are in private. The Rising shows who others perceive you to be. A person with Sun in Virgo, Moon in Sagittarius, and Rising in Aquarius will experience life very differently from a Virgo Sun with Scorpio Moon and Cancer Rising - even though their Sun sign is the same.
This calculator requires your birth date and, for the Rising sign, your approximate birth time. If you do not know your birth time, the Sun and Moon positions can still be calculated accurately; the Rising sign will be approximate.
